FAQ

Q. What experience does DataTrace have in the industry?

A. DataTrace has been in business providing professional investigative services since 1983. Scott Heinecke, CEO of DataTrace holds a bachelor's degree in police science and has over 35 years of law enforcement and investigative experience.

Q. What products and services does DataTrace provide?

A. DataTrace is a full service investigation firm providing services to attorneys, law firm staff, insurance companies, corporations and private individuals. Our primary services include: civil/criminal investigations, background checks, asset searches, skip tracing, surveillance, witness interviews, trial preparation, video and photography.

Q. How will reports be provided?

A. The format of our reports may vary depending upon the type of service ordered and the method that each client prefers. We can provide all background check reports on our secure website portal dedicated to the client. Reports will be available twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days per week, three hundred sixty-five (365) days a year. DataTrace can also email written reports to the client as attached documents or in the body of the email. We can also provide verbal reports as requested.

Q. How do I order an investigation?

A. This depends upon the type of client and the type of investigation required. For business clients that require background checks or other public record searches, we can set you up with access to our online ordering and report retrieval system. We also have an online order form you can access on our website. You can also email us a request or call our office to place a verbal order for services.

Q. How quickly can you start an investigation?

A. Usually 24-hour notice is plenty of time. It is often possible to start a case immediately. We first need to gather all of the facts and complete necessary forms in order to begin the investigation.

Q. What information is required to start a surveillance assignment?

A. Please provide us with a physical description as well as any photos of the Subject. We will also need addresses, vehicle information, time and place to start, plus the reason for surveillance. Our trained licensed investigators will obtain courtroom quality video evidence of all pertinent activities and back it up with experience and credibility.

Q. How much does it cost to hire an investigator for a surveillance assignment?

A. Surveillance is billed on an hourly basis plus a mileage charge. Rates are dependent on where the surveillance will take place. As a general rule, in remote areas, the rates are a bit higher. Before the case is started, a strategy is established depending on the circumstances and your needs. Once this plan is in place a budget can be established. We will never go over the surveillance time allotted according to your budget, without obtaining your permission beforehand. Investigative services are payable in advance of the work being conducted. Payment can be made by credit card, Pay Pal, or by cash, check, or money order.

Q.How many investigators are used on a surveillance case?

A. The number of investigators depends upon a number of factors. Basic surveillance on an individual being followed from home or an uncomplicated work situation can be conducted by one investigator. More complicated scenarios, such as following someone from a high rise office building, airport, or hotel may require an additional investigator. Other factors in which we may recommend a second investigator include fast and aggressive drivers and extra alert drivers who always watch the rear view mirror. An additional investigator increases the cost of surveillance, and this factor is also taken into consideration in arriving at your budget. For a proper frame of reference, consider the fact that no law enforcement agency would ever conduct surveillance with less than two cars and few do that. The more investigators, the less likely the chance of detection.

Q. Is my information kept confidential?

A. Yes and any information submitted to us verbally or via online is kept strictly confidential and is only released to the person requesting the investigation or others that have been authorized in writing to receive this information.

Q. How is the surveillance plan established?

A. Planning is often more important than execution. The better job we do of designing the surveillance, the more likely it is to be more productive and the more cost effective it will be. We rely on the client to provide us with the best information possible in order for us to determine the best times to try and document the suspected activities.

Q. Can I get a free price quote?

A. Yes, we provide a free no consultation via telephone or email. Call or email us for a free no obligation consultation.

Q. Is it legal to follow or conduct surveillance upon another person?

A. It is legal to conduct surveillance upon a person for legitimate purposes. You must hire a licensed investigator to carry out assignments. It is illegal in all states to record the voice without at least one person's consent. Many states require all parties to consent to an audio recording. Florida does not allow any type of audio recording.

Q. Will the subject of a surveillance find out that they are being watched?

A. Our surveillance investigations are 100% confidential. We do everything necessary to insure the covert nature of the investigation. If we ever perceive that the security of the investigation is threatened, we back off and re-evaluate with your input. On domestic cases it is important that you don’t threaten to hire an investigator or do anything else that might tip the subject that he may be under surveillance.

Q. What do I do once surveillance is set up?

A. Once the surveillance plan is in place it is important that you do not do anything to alert the subject of the investigation. Do not change your habits and do not ask too many questions about their activities.

Q. How can I reach your office?

A. You can call us at 801-253-2400 or toll free 800-748-5335 or click here to email us.

Q. What are your payment terms and methods?

A. We are happy to accept payments via Credit Card, Cheque, Bank Transfer, Paypal and other Online Payment methods. Note charges to credit cards will appear as DataTrace Online, Inc.

Q. Do you offer any guarantees for your services?

A. Due to the nature of any investigative assignment, it is not possible to offer a guarantee of any particular result on an investigation. We do guarantee that our goal with each case is to meet and exceed our clients stated objectives through an accurate, professional, thorough and cost effective investigation.

Q. How do you find people?

A. Locating people or skip tracing, as it is called in our business, if both an art and a science. We utilize proprietary data bases and other sources of information in addition to employing techniques acquired through many years of experience in conducting these types of investigations.

Q. I can't communicate normally, is this a problem?

A. No, we can arrange to contact you via e-mail or text message. If you can only speak to us at a specific time then please let us know or contact us via the call back form.

Q.What information do you need?

A. This depends on the service that is required.

For example, if we were being asked to locate a missing person we would like to know any or all of the following:

Full name

Last known address

National Insurance number

Date of birth

The names of relatives, previous employers and friends

Q. How long does it take to complete an investigation?

Q. What are your Office Hours?
